The Architect’s Apprentice is often overlooked in favor of Shafak’s other works. That perspective is unfortunate. The novel offers both vivid descriptions and intricate historical details, connecting a story of self-discovery to the grandeur of the Ottoman period. A major criticism of the work is its failure to weave genuine suspense into the plot, but that view may be more contrived than real. The casual reader will be taken by a robust storyline and luxurious setting.
