Thomas Edison may own the narrative about creating the first motion picture. The actual title, however, probably goes to the Frenchman Louis Le Prince. One reason why most have never heard of him is that Le Prince disappeared in 1890 under odd circumstances.

The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures
A True Tale of Obsession, Murder, and the Movies
Paul Fischer
The Man Who Invented Motion Pictures is part murder-mystery, part biography, and part non-fiction. The book tells the story of the earliest days of filmmaking with useful spotlights on an emerging US-European leisure class. Perhaps accidentally, the author has created a brilliant, if not engrossing, work on industrial history. ■
